#7192 Peking Chinese Rug

This fourth-quarter 19th-century antique Peking Chinese rug measures 6’1” X 8’7”. It has a dark blue field completely overwhelmed with activity.  There is a large rockery in camel hair and sand color across the bottom of the carpet on top of which is perched a phoenix bird, obviously the alpha male, who is checking out another male phoenix bird as a rival for the female perched in the branches at the top of the rug.  Small birds flit in and out of the branches of the trees which are holding two large cranes.  There is a cute little water feature with a couple of ducks swimming around beneath an arched rock which looks very like elephant rock on the Li River in China, above which is perched a spotted eagle.  The minor border is a modified Greek key motif on a   variegated blue ground.  The major border is a combination and of the fish scale motif, the diamond motif, and the wand motif.  It contains cartouches filled with horses, cattle, foo lions, dear, rabbits, foo dogs, water buffalo and possibly a fish.  The browns are slightly eroded in the field of the rug which is to be expected in a carpet of this age.  Other than that the rug is 100%.  This rug is clean and ready to go.  The buyer pays shipping with insurance of $90.00.
