#7073 Laver Kerman

This circa 1880 Laver Kerman carpet measures 4'7" X 7'6".  This is a very lovely Laver Kerman picture rug. I am sure there is a historical Persian story about the images on this rug.  There always are.   I don't know this story so I am going to make up one of my own.  I will read this story from the top down and from the right to the left, as is done in Persian writing, in a probably vain attempt at some factual accuracy.  Okay.  Here goes.  A man was lying on a mushroom couch in the middle of the forest having a half awakening dream of cavorting animals and birds, which are manifested above his head.  When all of a sudden a savage warrior in blue with his scimitar attacks him.  This startles him awake and he goes screaming to his father, the King, below him wearing a crown.  His father wanting to comfort his son, as any father would, sends him to one of the women of his harem who takes the startled man child to her lap and strokes his fevered brow.  This pleases the kid so much that he decides to overthrow his father the King so he can have full possession of these women and all that go with them.   This is manifested by the image in the lower right of the son wearing the crown and taming the wild beasts pictured here as a leopard and the lion, as these are manly things, as opposed to the frolicking animals of his childhood.  I hope you have enjoyed my allegory which I suppose the moral is "fathers look out, the kids are coming".  The rug is completely surrounded by a very attractive border composed of a monkey nursing her baby, a dog chasing a rabbit, a wild cat killing a deer, and another cat killing the fish.   The two minor reciprocal borders are composed of goat heads in profile. In each corner is a very interesting surprise which I think is a Devils head with horns.  Condition wise, I don't think this rug has spent much time on the floor.  I think it is been hung on a wall.  There is no real wear on the rug, only erosion, which is to be expected.  The ends and sides are intact.  The rug is clean and ready to go.  The buyer pays shipping with insurance of $75.00.
