#7057 Hajalil Tabriz This circa 1880 Hajalil Tabriz Meditation carpet is of a type belonging only to Hajilili Tabriz and a few very rare Kashans. It measures 46 X 68. The variegated terra-cotta ground depicts ethereal nightmarish images. There is a beautifully drawn tree of life motif capped by a hanging chandelier bearing various fruits such as apples, oranges, bananas etc. with two kneeling goats at its base. The whole thing is springing from a water feature containing two well drawn fish. As one proceeds to the edges of the rug we encounter two cypress trees at the rear of the goats. Preceding outward to a pair of full maned tawny lemon yellow lions which are supporting Persian Jinns (devils) complete with horns and a tail. The Jinns are supporting a pair of columns around which circle flowering vines, the tops of which boast horned devils and fire breathing dragons. Above all this in the spandrels of the rug are beautifully drawn bowls of fruit, as if in the decapitated heads dreams. Above this is an isolated ivory bar containing rows of flowers. This is very much like a Ghiordes, only more beautiful. The primary border is an arched motif containing various definitions of flowering plants which is flanked with reciprocal borderers of meandering vines and flower heads. This rug is unbelievably ethereal especially in the way the artist has depicted very dark images in a very beautiful manner. One could stare at this rug for ones life and never get all of it. This rug is full pile. There are a few places where the pile has puckered which is in every Hajilili Tabriz of this age I have ever seen. This is most notable by the base of the chandelier at the top of the tree of life. Otherwise for its age it is essentially perfect. The ends and sides are complete. It is clean and ready to go. The buyer pays for shipping and insurance $75.00. |
