#6823 Turkish Kula

This 18th century Turkish Kula measures 4’1” X 6’10”. It is the ‘tomb and tree’ motif which has given rise to the characterization ‘Grave Kula’. The prayer field is in a wonderful pale green while the spandrels above the prayer niche are in the most beautiful sky blue I have ever seen.  This color comes down forming the inner border and giving the prayer field a feeling of floating.  The panels at either end of the field are ivory with a golden brown leaf motif at the bottom and an almost beetle (waterbug) looking  motif at the top.  Two panels like this are not often seen.  There are the normal multiple narrow borders, in this case six, in alternating ivory and in an almost fugitive green.  The outer border is complete but the edges have been replaced.  This rug is in excellent condition for its age.
