#6234 Very Antique Peking Chinese

This circa 1825 very Antique Peking Chinese rug measures 8’7” X 11’3”. This Peking Chinese rug is out of this world. Every one wants blue and white…here it is! It has an ivory ground as white as new snow. There is a central medallion like a tracery of a roundel stained glass window. The field design includes lotus blossoms drawn on a big scale. The most exciting thing about this rug is the border, which I have never seen before in all my years in the rug business. It gives the feeling of the humps of an undulating dragon in the water. Bridging some of these humps are little humpbacked bridges with little houses on top of them. The corners of the border have what appears to be a lobster. I would say a butterfly, but this is definitely an underwater scene. Going up the side and at the center of the border are two fish facing each other flanked with what appear to be shrimps. There are also some cone shaped shells. The more I look at this the more it seems to be an aquarium woven in wool! There is wear in the field commensurate with the age of the carpet. This rug is truly fabulous. One doesn’t often get a chance to buy a rug of this age and beauty. It is a rare work of Chinese art. The shipping charge to the buyer is $250.00.
